Can a 10 × 10 canopy fit beside my vehicle?

Short answer: a 10 × 10 canopy fits beside most cars when the site is at least about 17–18 ft wide. If it’s narrower, put the canopy at the back of the vehicle instead. The exact answer depends on your vehicle’s width, where the canopy legs sit, and how much room you want for opening doors.

The quick math

Side by side, you need roughly vehicle width + canopy width + door room. End to end, you need vehicle length + canopy depth along the long side of the site. The vehicle sizes below are FestivalPlot’s starter estimates. Measure your own vehicle, including mirrors, before relying on them.

Approximate space needed for a vehicle and a 10 × 10 canopy
Vehicle (starter size)Side by side, no spare roomEnd to end
Sedan, about 6.2 × 16 ftabout 16.2 ft wideabout 26 ft long
SUV, about 6.6 × 16.5 ftabout 16.6 ft wideabout 26.5 ft long
Pickup (crew cab), about 6.8 × 19.5 ftabout 16.8 ft wideabout 29.5 ft long

Add room on top of those numbers. If the canopy legs sit right against the vehicle, you may not be able to open the doors on that side, so many people leave about a door’s width (often around 3 ft) between them.

Example: sedan and canopy in a 20 × 20 ft site

In a 20 ft wide site, a sedan along one edge and a 10 × 10 canopy beside it fit with a little room to spare.

Example: when side by side doesn’t fit

In a 16 ft wide site, a full-size pickup plus a 10 × 10 canopy is wider than the site, so the canopy crosses the boundary. The planner flags this.

The usual fix: put the canopy behind the tailgate

If the site is long enough, put the canopy at the back of the vehicle. The tailgate or hatch can then open into the shade, which works well for a camp kitchen. The planner treats the canopy as overhead cover, so a table underneath it isn’t a conflict.

Details that change the answer

  • Slant-leg vs. straight-leg canopies. Slant-leg frames spread wider at the ground than at the roof, so the footprint can be noticeably bigger than “10 × 10”. Measure leg to leg at ground level.
  • Mirrors and doors. Spec-sheet widths usually leave out mirrors, and doors you need to open need clear space beside them.
  • Weights and stakes. Leg weights and guylines add a little on every side.
  • Site rules. Some events don’t allow canopies to overhang a lane or a neighbor, or they limit canopy size. Check the current official rules for your site.

Try it with your numbers

Open any example above, select the vehicle, and type in your own width and length. Then drag the canopy around. The layout check lists anything that overlaps or crosses the boundary, and you can set your own walkway target in the campsite settings.
